Red Digital Photo Christmas Cards
The holiday custom of sending photo Christmas cards was started by
accident. In 1843 Englishman John Calcott Horsley was commissioned by
Sir Henry Cole in London to illustrate a card of which a batch of 1000
were printed and sold for a shilling each. Early Christmas cards seldom
depicted religious or winter scenes but rather featured flowers or
fancy designs that reminded the recipient of springtime. Humorous
imagery and pictures featuring children and animals were also very
popular. Elaborate shapes, decorations, designs and materials soon
became increasingly trendy.Red is probably the most popular of Christmas's traditional colors. Its use during the season could possibly have origins from the patron saint of Russia. St. Nicholas was a wealthy bishop and wore a bright red robe or red cape over his shoulders. He is known to have given coins and gifts to poor children during his time. He eventually evolved into the red clad Santa Claus in America.
Today the tradition of sending holiday greeting cards continues and has even been enhanced in the computer age by providing us with the ability to create digitally produced photo holiday cards. What a great way to send greetings to family and friends! A favorite photo of your family, baby, pet or even of yourself can be uploaded and sent off to be printed on the front of a digital photo Christmas card bordered in traditional red.
