Qualities of a Great Photographer

Have you ever marveled at how well a photo was taken? Great photos start with great photographers. Excellent technical photography skills are certainly helpful, but drawing upon some of your personal qualities is important too. Don't worry, you don't have to be a professional to take great digital photos. Apply some of these qualities when taking pictures and you'll be on your way to capturing awesome shots.

Patience

The band Guns N' Roses had it right: “All we need is just a little patience.” If you discipline yourself to wait for the moment instead of quickly forcing a shot, you'll find that your digital photos will improve. Especially if you're photographing children, animals or sports events, patience is key to capturing the perfect shot.

Detail-Oriented

Developing an eye for detail will open up worlds of opportunity when taking pictures. For example, instead of taking photos of a tree from top to bottom, focus in on a portion of the tree and look at other small details that will compose the digital photo in a more interesting way. Consider the details of the entire shot so you realize everything that will be captured in the image.

Personable

Do you work well with other people? Being a “people person” definitely helps you manage the moment you're aiming to capture when photographing groups and individuals.

Imagination and Creativity

It's easy enough to take the obvious shot. But what if you put a unique spin on a photo?

Planning

Some shots need thought in advance. For example, if you're taking photos at a family reunion, you should first think about how you can set up different shots with a big group of people. Maybe even make a list of the family relationships so you don't accidentally miss your great aunt Lolly and suffer the wrath of your relatives for excluding her from the family photos.

Dedication

Keep with it until you get the photo you want! Trying to get the perfect digital photo of your daughter swinging her bat during a baseball game? Capturing action shots can be especially challenging but just keep clicking away and you'll eventually get the shot you were hoping for.

Adaptable and Flexible

So your plan was taking photos during a bright, sunny day and now it's raining? So what! Adapt to your environment and relax. Even if your original plan is foiled, you can take advantage of a new opportunity.

While being technically sound contributes to great photos, taking advantage of your personal characteristics can go a long way towards improving your digital photos. Develop into a dynamic photographer by trusting your own qualities.
